Department of Animal Science
The department emphasizes professional knowledge and technique in the field of animal science. Besides focusing on intellect development of students on basic sciences, we also place our education and research emphases on animal nutrition, animal physiology, genetics and breeding, livestock and poultry production, farm management and animal products processing. To meet the market demand, the requirement of resource preservation, and environmental protection at the same time, we actively provide knowledge of modern animal science research and technology to help speed up the upgrade of animal industry, and its competitiveness in Taiwan.
To be granted a Master degree, graduate students must complete 30 credits at a minimum, including 6 thesis credits, 4 credits in field required courses, 20 credits in field elective courses.
Undergraduate students are required to complete 128 credits, including 30 credits requisite in general education course, 53 credits in field requisite, 45 credits in field optional course (at least complete 30 credits related to the field of animal science). Our department has also categorized curriculums into five fields: animal reproduction and physiology; animal nutrition and feeding ; animal genetics and breeding; animal products utilization; and management and leisure areas.
The department has 6 full-time professors, 4 associate professors, 1 assistant professor, and 1 lecturer, of which Dr. 10 people. Teachers study covers the above-mentioned five major areas.
1. Students graduated from the department can be qualified by the national examination, employed in animal production, marketing, and research works in various organizations including government administrative and, technical guidance divisions, livestock laboratories, and livestock farms. They can also be employed in meat processing, frozen food, and feed and drug industries, or self-employed.
2. Graduates may pursue further training at graduate schools of Animal Science, or at Bio-technology, Food Science, and/or other fields related to animal science.
In order to fulfill expected goal of teaching, theory should be tied to practice. The department especially emphasizes the planning and implementation of practice curriculums. In addition to 16 well-equipped laboratories, we have established cattle, chicken, pig, and goat farms, products processing and wastewater treatment plants. Recently, a new building namely “Animal products R&D&E” center was start using. The facility gives students opportunities to practice and experience the feeding management and utilization of animal products.
