China Painting Studio
National Chiayi University
Originating in China, china also named porcelain or ceramic is one of virtuous heritages in human history and culture. In earlier days, people made china utensils or tools for practical purposes. As time progresses, continued accumulation of experiences and related skills enable achievements of advanced manufacturing techniques, diverse choice of materials and various shapes of china, as well as integration of humanities, arts and aesthetics as elements into the manufacturing processes. Among them, glazed china works finished by undergoing several times of painting and kilning are the most impressive, and can be said to witness the magnificence of Chinese culture by their remarkable enduring, time-proof qualities. The arts after spreading overseas have been rapturously received by the general public in Europe. To meet the ever rising demands, a great number of prestigious porcelain artists have piled into the market by making valuable china paintings, which have since been collected and treasured by the royalties and aristocrats as a means to carry out cultural dialogues and a symbol of social status. While the development of china painting took place mainly in Europe, many other countries in the world also comprehended its historical values and started to promote arts of china painting. Nowadays, china painting has become a global fad. Despite the fact that porcelain manufacture industries have flourished in Taiwan, the arts of china painting remain a new field and need to explore by efforts of education, promotion and development. National Chiayi University (NCYU) is dedicated to fulfilling its educational mission by exposing its students to the knowledge of humanities and arts, as well as the importance of aesthetics in life. It was by chance that I met Ms. Hsu, Jui-Feng (Fay Lee), an artist born in Chiayi who has long been living in New Zealand and currently the vice chairman of the New Zealand Ceramic Artists Association. Ms. Hsu has been committed to the arts of china painting more than a decade, during which she honed her skills by pursuing advanced studies with European masters and displaying her works internationally for many times. Boasting of more than 200 works, she has won acclaims in the world of china painting. Every time when coming back home, she sighed by the fact that her beloved art of china painting was still strange to the home-town people and thus raised her idea to promote education of china painting in Chiayi. After having several contacts and holding a china painting exhibition in NCYU, she appreciated the educational objective of the university, which places emphasis on both humanities and technology, and accepted the offer to serve as an artist in residence. As integration to the future university development, we decided to establish “China Painting Studio” as an educating platform of china painting. In the days to come, this studio will be functioned to pass down the heritage of arts and education, incubate china painting masters, so as to lay the foundation of the arts in Taiwan. By promoting the cultural and creative industries related to china painting, we hope to inspire the greater public with passion to engage in cultural activities, and to better understand the importance of arts and aesthetics.
