Research Experience

Dr. Cheng received his B.S. (1991) degree in Chemistry from National Cheng-Kung University, Taiwan and M.S. (1993) degree in Chemistry from National Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan. After military service (two years) and experience as a research assistant, he started his Ph.D. program at UC-Davis, USA in 1997. He received his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from University of California, Davis, CA, USA (1997-2002). He then worked in Chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute, San Diego, USA as a postdoctoral fellow (2002-2004). Dr. Cheng started his independent career as Assistant Research Fellow at the Genomics Research Center at Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan in 2004 and became Associate Research Fellow in 2010.

Research Interests

The major research efforts of our group are directed toward the development of new synthetic strategies for biologically interesting natural products and heterocycles. To understand the relationships between small molecules and biological systems, combinatorial approaches are applied in our diverse molecule library synthesis (core diversity, substituent diversity, and configuration diversity) with the assistance of automated or semi-automated equipment. Research interests include: Organic chemistry, Synthetic methodology, Natural product and bioactive molecule synthesis, Matrix-supported organic synthesis, Combinatorial chemistry, Synthesis of new glycophospholipids, Synthesis and functional study of Novel iminosugar alkaloids, Natural product-like library synthesis, Synthesis of bacterial (mycobacterial) cell wall components, Development of new chemical probes for biological applications, Pathogen host interaction, New molecules for innate immune study, Bioorganic chemistry, Chemical biology, Small molecules as chemical chaperones or specific stabilizers of protein drugs for potential treatments of lysosomal storage diseases, Development of new antibiotics, and Drug discovery. Recently, our lab is dedicated to “natural product inspired combinatorial chemistry” and its applications.
