NCYU Approved by MOE to Launch Master’s Program in Chinese and Western Medical Sciences to Cultivate Advanced Interdisciplinary Professionals

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has approved NCYU to establish a Master’s Program in Chinese and Western Medical Sciences starting in the 2026 academic year, admitting a total of six students – three through recommendation and three through examination. The launch of this program not only responds to the government’s pressing demand for medical professionals in an aging society, but also marks a significant milestone in NCYU’s ongoing efforts to expand medical education and research.

Since taking office, NCYU President Han-Chien Lin has actively promoted the establishment of departments in medicine and pharmacy, steadily advancing NCYU’s medical education from basic research to clinical application and interdisciplinary integration, with the ultimate goal of founding a College of Holistic Health (Chinese) Medicine. The new master’s program will focus on cultivating advanced professionals with expertise in basic biomedical sciences, Chinese herbal medicine, clinical applications, and AI-driven digital technologies, aiming to enhance human health and quality of life through innovative and precision medical research, and to contribute to the vision of a healthy and long-lived society.

Human physical and mental health are closely tied to medical applications, which play an increasingly crucial role in an aging society. The curriculum of the NCYU Master’s Program in Chinese and Western Medical Sciences balances theory and practice, featuring two major modules: Medical Sciences and Drug Development. In terms of faculty, in addition to the strong team from the College of Life Sciences, including Prof. Ruey-Shyang Chen, Distinguished Prof. Yi-Wen Liu (Western medicine), and Associate Prof. Lih-Geeng Chen (Chinese medicine), NCYU has recently recruited Prof. Shun-Ping Huang and Assistant Prof. Hou-Hsun Liao, both of whom bring extensive experience in hospital clinical practice and academic teaching.

Prof. Shun-Ping Huang previously served as a professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics at Tzu Chi University and as an attending physician in the Department of Ophthalmology at Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital. He will primarily teach courses on precision medicine in the Master’s Program in Chinese and Western Medical Sciences. Assistant Prof. Hou-Hsun Liao earned his Ph.D. from the School of Chinese Medicine at China Medical University and currently serves as Director of the Department of Chinese Internal Medicine at Dalin Tzu Chi General Hospital. Specializing in the treatment of immune disorders and cancer, he will primarily teach courses on clinical data research and applications in Chinese medicine within the program.

Building on its long-standing foundation in bio-agricultural research, NCYU will integrate its existing research strengths with emerging medical education in the new Master’s Program in Chinese and Western Medical Sciences, creating an innovative interdisciplinary research platform. Moving forward, NCYU will continue to deepen its medical education and research, promote interdisciplinary and industry-academia collaboration, and cultivate medical professionals with global perspectives, innovative thinking, and practical skills – striving to contribute further to the development of Taiwan’s medical sector and the well-being of global human health.
